Bishop: GOP Chooses My Way Over Our Highways

Sep

Last summer, our nation’s creditworthiness was held hostage to political gamesmanship by Republicans, causing significant damage to the economy and public confidence in the federal government. More recently, the critical operations of the Federal Aviation Administration were hamstrung for weeks by the injection of partisan posturing into a traditionally nonpartisan issue — airline safety.| read more ››

Islip Town's 730-person workforce would shrink by 40 percent, or 240 workers, under a 2013 budget that includes a zero percent tax increase, a cut town Comptroller Joseph Ludwig said would be "devastating."

Ludwig's comments Thursday came during a special meeting of the town board, during which several key department heads -- including those from public works, public safety enforcement, and parks, recreation and cultural affairs -- presented proposed 2013 budgets 10 percent to 50 percent lower than 2012.

The presentations were at the behest of Supervisor Tom Croci, who is dealing with a projected $26 million deficit.

The pared-down budgets would have broad environmental, health-and-safety, and quality-of-life impacts, the department heads said, including the shuttering of all town...| read more ››

Three out of five registered voters in New York ages 30 to 64 support Governor Cuomo’s plan to create a health insurance exchange, which is estimated to provide coverage for 1 million uninsured New Yorkers and reduce the cost of insurance for small businesses and those who are self-insured, with no cost to the State, according to a survey by AARP.| read more ››

They came by email, on Facebook and Twitter, and through the postal service. Some came by phone, and others in face-to-face exchanges.

When Islip Supervisor Tom Croci recently asked town residents for input on closing the $26 million budget deficit, hundreds of residents responded.

"Hi Tom, I read your facebook message, you have every right to raise all tax payers 10-15 (dollars) per month to get out of this mess," wrote Larry Farrell, 48, a sales consultant from Ronkonkoma and registered Republican who voted for Croci. "I study my tax bill and can confirm to you that raising by this much is not a big deal at all."

As the Republican town leader works to present his first budget...| read more ››

A new poll has Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop with a 13-point edge over his GOP opponent, Randy Altschuler.

The Siena College Research Institute poll, released Thursday, shows the five-term congressman from Southampton leading the St. James businessman 52 percent to 39 percent, among 624 likely voters surveyed from Sept. 5 to 10. That includes 25 percent of Republicans saying they'd support the incumbent Democrat.

"What we see here is a district that's somewhat conservative leaning, yet they're not ready to fully get behind the Republican candidate," said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg.

Reflecting overall registration, slightly more poll respondents identified themselves as Republican than Democratic in a district in which GOP nominee Mitt Romney is expected to compete closely with President...| read more ››

The Ryan Budget & Medicare

Sep

The House budget drawn up by Rep. Paul Ryan would end Medicare as we know it. Instead of a defined benefit plan run through Medicare, seniors would receive an $8000 voucher to purchase private health insurance in the open market. This will increase out-of-pocket health care costs for a typical 65 year-old senior by more than $6,000 by 2022. That is more than double the cost under current law.| read more ››

Less than 600 votes separated them last time, but with eight weeks to go in their rematch, Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop has seized a 13-point lead over Republican Randy Altschuler, according to a new poll released Thursday.

According to Siena College, Bishop (D-Southampton) leads Altschuler, a St. James businessman, 52 percent to 39 percent, among 624 Suffolk County voters surveyed from Sept. 5 to 10. Notably, Bishop led among independent voters, 49 percent to 41 percent.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Siena said that voters saw Bishop as better representing them on most issues, including taxes, jobs and the war in Afghanistan.

The two candidates have recently unleashed critical television ads...| read more ››
