After questions raised, Islip GOP chairman declines paid post

The chairman of the Islip Republican Committee on Thursday declined his appointment as a paid legal adviser to the town's planning board, an arrangement critics had decried as political patronage.

Frank A. Tantone, a lawyer the Republican-dominated town board appointed to the $55,000 annual contractual position in May, said that because of Islip's "challenging [financial] times" he would likely volunteer to do the job.

"While I appreciate being selected for such a significant public service, I have notified the town attorney that in light of Islip's looming financial crisis, it sets a better example to donate my services without compensation to help the town through these challenging times," Tantone said in a statement.

In an interview, Tantone, a former...| read more ››

Oct

2012

Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) and State Senator Ken LaValle today held a meeting at the Stony Brook Southampton Campus to promote a new law they sponsored which provides a tax incentive to builders and homeowners who construct energy efficient green buildings. The law passed in the Assembly 140-0 and in the State Senate 59-0.

The new law authorizes a local government or school district by local law, ordinance, or resolution to provide a real property tax exemption for construction or improvements constructed after January 1, 2013 which meet LEED certification standards for green buildings. The new law covers buildings constructed or improved for businesses as well as homeowners. As part of today’s event, Thiele and...| read more ››

Blue Point could soon be home to one of the largest open areas in Brookhaven Town as a councilman is advocating a town purchase of 17 acres along Maple Street, once known as the Kurt Weiss Greenhouse/Scro property.

But while most residents favor a park effort, not all are in agreement to the exact type of park should be created. The Blue Point Civic Association is holding an informational meeting on November 13 at the James Wilson Young Middle School, beginning at 7 p.m., to discuss why the site should be an ‘active’ park rather than a ‘passive’ park.

Initially the land was going to be bought from the current owner by both Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town with potential...| read more ››

Bishop, Altschuler Debate Jobs, Economy In Bridgehampton

Oct

2012

The debate between Democratic U.S. Representative Tim Bishop and Republican Randy Altschuler in Bridgehampton on Monday turned inward when the candidates argued over their campaign tactics in a race marked by a flood of attack ads.

The two men covered well-trodden ground in what was their fourth debate on the East End, once again laying out their differing visions for economic recovery. But to a greater extent than in past debates, they expressed frustration over the tone of the race itself.

The candidates even attacked each other’s attacks during an extended exchange, with Mr. Altschuler calling the congressman’s tactics “filthy” and Mr. Bishop calling his opponent’s ads “unseemly.”

“This has been an ugly, bruising campaign,” Mr. Bishop said. “I think...| read more ››

Spending by outside groups top $2M in House race

Oct

Spending by outside interest groups in the congressional race between Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) and St. James Republican Randy Altschuler has topped $2 million -- double the total spent by such groups when the candidates first squared off in 2010.

Prosperity First Inc., a new super PAC largely funded by East Setauket hedge fund manager Robert Mercer, on Tuesday purchased $104,868 in ads supporting Altschuler, according to Federal Election Commission reports. Over five weeks, the PAC has poured nearly $800,000 into the 1st Congressional District contest.
Bishop, seeking his sixth term, has benefited from only about 20 percent of expenditures by groups that operate independently of candidate committees. On Tuesday, the Communications Workers of America's Working Voices PAC bought...| read more ››
