Suffolk County has announced new initiatives in an effort to combat heroin and opiate abuse on Long Island.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Assistant Deputy County Executive for Public Safety Timothy Sini were among a host of county officials to introduce the initiatives on Monday.

Aimed at providing residents with an alternative to combat heroin and other opiate abuse, the county unveiled partnerships to raise awareness and facilitate the use of the FDA-approved drug Vivitrol — an extended release form of naltrexone.

Sini told 1010 WINS the drug will give those hooked on heroin and opioids a fighting chance at recovery.

“It’s a monthly injection. So for that period of time it effectively prevents opioid relapses. It also decreases...| read more ››

Persons Of The Year 2014 - William R. 'Doc' Spencer, MD

Jan

2015

Every year, Long Islander News honors a person who has made a significant contribution to the Town of Huntington. We look for a dynamic force who has made history, gone above and beyond a call of duty, and made Huntington a better place.

For 2014, that person is Legislator William Spencer.

Now in his third year as a lawmaker, Spencer has waged major battles to pass legislation important to him – and he usually wins the fight. Whether tackling energy drinks, barring dangerous fracking byproducts from being used in the county, securing millions in aid for Northport Village to complete mandated sewage treatment plant upgrades and winning his biggest political and legislative battle to raise the tobacco-buying age in Suffolk...| read more ››

Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who championed the power of government and liberalism to advance society with eloquence and compassion, died Thursday at his home in Manhattan. He was 82.

His death came hours after his son was sworn in to his second term as New York's governor.

The family said in a statement, "the Governor passed away from natural causes due to heart failure this evening at home with his loving family at his side."

Earlier Thursday, at his swearing-in, Andrew M. Cuomo said: "I went through the speech with him. He said it was good, especially for a second-termer. See, my father is a third-termer. But he sends his regards to all of you. He couldn't be here physically today,...| read more ››

A Huntington couple received a free septic system as part of a pilot-program to help reduce nitrogen contamination in Suffolk County’s water supply.

Jeanne and Gustavo Sawicki were the winners in the district served by Leg. William Spencer, D-Centerport.

In total, 19 homeowners were chosen by lottery on Monday at a general meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. More than 130 Suffolk residents applied to participate in the septic lottery. The applicants were vetted to ensure they met the required criteria for installation of the advanced wastewater treatment systems.

The advanced wastewater treatment systems, which were donated by four national manufacturers, are valued at up to $15,000 per system, officials said.

“This initiative represents a significant step in improving the...| read more ››

Tom Schiliro, candidate for the 2nd Assembly District, has been endorsed by the League of Humane Voters, which recognizes that Schiliro has displayed an express commitment to supporting animal protections through his advocacy for the Consolidated Animal Crimes Bill and his commitment to advocating for animals across all species.

“As a police officer, I have seen too many innocent animals mistreated with no one to defend them. It’s time to give them a voice,” said Schiliro. “In the Assembly, I will support the Consolidated Animal Crimes Bill to protect our pets and all animals.”

Schiliro Shines in First Debate for Assembly Seat

Riverhead – Assembly candidate Tom Schiliro won his debate last night against Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo in their race for the 2nd Assembly District seat. “It is evident that Mr. Palumbo and I do not agree on several vital issues that affect the community, with women’s equality being the most essential. It is preposterous that he blames Democrats for holding up the Women’s Equality Bill when he’s the one who voted against it,” stated Schiliro. “I will remain steadfast on supporting all 10 Points of the Women’s Equality Act, ensuring that a woman retains her right to choose.”

An account of the debate at Riverhead Polish Hall along with the full video can be seen here....| read more ››
