Assemblyman Hennessey: State must prioritize $4 billion windfall - Invest in local roads and infrastructure, restore school aid funding, and provide tax relief

Assemblyman Edward Hennessey (D-Medford) is urging the governor to prioritize the state’s $4.2 billion windfall which is part of this year’s state surplus and use it for infrastructure improvements, tax relief, and to abolish the harmful Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) which has siphoned education funding from our schools and placed the burden on taxpayers.

Infrastructure:
Many local governments are financially strained and don’t have the funding to make the needed repairs to our roadways. That is where this surplus comes in. It will help make those necessary repairs creating safer, more reliable roads without further burdening...| read more ››

Aug

2014

North Fork residents say their peace and quiet is under siege from a 40 percent surge in the number of Hamptons-bound helicopters and they are demanding that the FAA do something about it.

Local officials want the Federal Aviation Administration to force flight paths around Orient Point. Federal legislators said they have repeatedly pushed the FAA to require a helicopter route that goes around the North Fork, and will continue to do so.

Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell and Suffolk Legis. Al Krupski (D-Cutchogue) will hold a public meeting Monday to discuss the issue with a team from the FAA and representatives for U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Tim Bishop.

"It's a huge problem and it's...| read more ››

ROCKY POINT – momentum is building behind Tom Schiliro’s (D-Manorville) campaign for New York State Assembly in the 2nd District. He was recently endorsed by several prominent pro-labor groups and local unions.

“We deserve a representative who understands the issues affecting our community,” said Schiliro. “Our families need tax relief to keep more of their hard- earned money in their own pockets. We also need to improve our business climate to help spur economic growth here on Long Island. I’m honored that these labor groups believe I am the right person to accomplish these goals.”

Schiliro has earned the support of 1199 Service Employees International Union (1199 SEIU), Local 338 Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), Local 1104 Communications...| read more ››

Dean Murray's latest political stunt crosses the line

Aug

2014

“Dean Murray’s latest political stunt crosses the line. He has clearly reached a new low. I don’t know what’s worse – attempting to mislead the court in a lawsuit claiming I don’t live here, or having some creep crawl under my family car to place a GPS tracking device to stalk us. With this disturbing behavior, Murray has taken negative campaigning to a new low. The judge affirmed I live in the district, and now voters should question whether this man who has gone to such bizarre lengths to prove otherwise is really fit for public office.

“The baseless accusations of Murray’s lawsuit have been a desperate attempt, yes to harm me, but even worse to disenfranchise voters. In...| read more ››

Hennessey residency upheld, heads to Murray rematch

Aug

2014

A state judge has rejected a Republican claim that Assemb. Edward Hennessey (D-Shirley) doesn't actually live in the 3rd Assembly District, likely setting up an election rematch with Dean Murray.

State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Pitts ruled that Hennessey has a legal residence in Smith Point, dismissing Republican claims that the Democrat lives in East Moriches, outside the 3rd Assembly District.

Hennessey edged Murray, an East Patchogue Republican, in 2012 but didn't have to live in the district at the time because lines in all legislative seats had been redrawn that year as part of a once-a-decade reapportionment. He was obligated to relocate, however, within a year.

Hennessey said he bought a house in Smith Point in 2013, through a...| read more ››

Legislator Al Krupski, who represents the First District in the Suffolk County Legislature and who serves on the Legislature’s Debt Reduction Committee, has introduced legislation which would require the County’s Joint Audit Committee to meet on a quarterly basis.

According to Legislator Krupski, the purpose of the legislation is “to ensure there is good communication among the fiscal entities in county government and to keep the legislature fully informed of the state of the county’s fiscal health.”

Although the Legislature is periodically updated on the county’s finances, there is no set schedule for routine updates. In addition, the legislation directs the chair of the committee to prepare a written report within 30 days of their quarterly meeting outlining the substance...| read more ››

Village takes full control of Railroad dock

The Railroad Dock on Third Street in Greenport is no longer under county control.

In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Suffolk County Legislature ended its lease with property owner Metropolitan Transit Authority. Greenport Village will now hold the lease directly with the MTA.

Legislator Al Krupski (D-Cutchogue) called the move a win-win. He said managing the property was costly for the county but an amenity to the village.

“We took out a layer of bureaucracy,” Mr. Krupski said. “Instead of the county, MTA and Greenport being involved, we can let them handle their own issue, which they should. I’m a firm believer in local control. The county shouldn’t be involved there.”

Since the early 1980s, the county has acted as...| read more ››
