An early poll commissioned by Democratic U.S. Representative Tim Bishop’s campaign suggests that he currently holds a double-digit lead over Republican Randy Altschuler, the congressman’s possible challenger this November and the man who came within 600 votes of unseating him two years ago.

The poll, which was paid for by Tim Bishop for Congress, concludes that the incumbent congressman currently holds a 17-point lead over Mr. Altschuler, who hopes to challenge Mr. Bishop a second time this fall. While he recently secured the Independence Party line, Mr. Altschuler, who was the Republican nominee in 2010, must first hold off a challenge from fellow Republican George Demos in a primary election that is scheduled for June 26 before securing the GOP...| read more ››

Bureau Will Increase Public Safety and Raise Revenue

Hauppauge, LI—Tuesday, March 27: Legislator Rob Calarco took the first step towards fulfilling a campaign promise Tuesday night when his bill to establish a Suffolk County Traffic Violations Bureau (SC TVB) was passed unanimously at the General Meeting of the Legislature. Presently, traffic violations issued within the Suffolk County Police District are prosecuted by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. The result is a loss of local control of the process, increased overtime costs for Police Officers to attend DMV hearings, as well as all ticket revenue being sent to New York State. The new SC TVB, similar to the Nassau County model, will make the process easier for local residents, reduce...| read more ››

Bishop: GOP Chooses My Way Over Our Highways

Mar

2012

As Members of Congress return to Washington, D.C., this week, Republican brinkmanship has once again frozen progress on Americans’ top national priority — creating jobs.
Last summer, our nation’s creditworthiness was held hostage to political gamesmanship by Republicans, causing significant damage to the economy and public confidence in the federal government. More recently, the critical operations of the Federal Aviation Administration were hamstrung for weeks by the injection of partisan posturing into a traditionally nonpartisan issue — airline safety.

Now, during the beginning of prime construction season, House Republicans are idling on national transportation policy, voting on another temporary extension — the ninth in a row — to authorize federal spending on highways and mass transit. The path that...| read more ››

Bill would require some drugs to be locked

Mar

A proposed law would require pharmacies in Suffolk County to store their strongest prescription pills in locked, immovable cabinets or face fines.

Legis. William Spencer (D-Centerport), introduced the bill in response to Long Island drugstore robberies last year, including two that turned fatal. The bill is set for public hearing at Tuesday's legislature meeting, and could be approved next month.

State law requires that pharmacies keep controlled substances secured and safeguarded, but unlike for hospitals and nursing homes, provides little additional direction.

Sag Harbor-Greenport ferry idea advances

Mar

2012

Sag Harbor's village board has cracked open the door to creating the first new ferry service in Suffolk County in decades -- a water taxi that would run between the South Fork village and Greenport on the North Fork.

Village officials in Greenport Friday night are expected to discuss giving their approval to the project as well. The Suffolk Legislature -- which would have to approve the route and set the fares -- is already reviewing an application for the service.

"We've got to have a hearing on the county level, but it's on track [to open] by Memorial Day," said Legis. Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), who has an office in Sag Harbor. "It will be a very scenic ride ....| read more ››
