Dr. William Spencer, Chairman of the Suffolk County Health Committee, is headed to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to testify about the dangers of energy drinks and to press for a ban on marketing the drinks to minors.

A law passed in Suffolk County restricts the sale of energy drinks in parks and prevents companies from couponing and marketing towards teenagers.

"(In doctors' offices) we've seen an increase of 10-fold over ten years with children with issues (related to the consumption of energy drinks.) If it is too much caffeine they come in anxious, heart racing and for children with heart issues this is life threatening, said Dr. Spencer.

Legislation requiring new standards for those who install and maintain residential pools and spas and mandating stiffer penalties for those who break those regulations was signed into law Wednesday by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

Bellone was joined with Legis. William Spencer (D-Centerport) at a Halesite home to announce the county’s pool safety and consumer protection program, which include two resolutions passed by the county legislature in April.

“This represents a great model for how we should be operating in government: A partnership between industry and government to come up with commonsense regulations that help protect the safety and the health and welfare of constituents,” Bellone said.

The law will create a registry for pool maintenance businesses and expand the...| read more ››

ORIENT -- Congressman Tim Bishop was joined today by a coalition of elected officials and environmental advocates to announce the introduction of his new bipartisan bill aimed at preserving critical biodiversity and preventing further development on Plum Island by eliminating the current requirement in law that the island be sold at public auction.

Legislation passed by Congress in 2008 mandates the public sale of Plum Island, with the proceeds intended to partially offset the $1.2 billion cost of the proposed National Bio-and-Agro Defense Facility (NBAF) in Kansas. At a press conference in Orient with the 840-acre, federally-owned island in the background, Bishop said that Plum Island's value as a research facility and wildlife conservation area far exceeds any revenue that...| read more ››

Many eastbound travelers are welcomed into the lush North and South Forks by a congested traffic circle and a desolate, boarded up “Main Street” in Riverside. Just across the Peconic River lies a bustling Riverhead, and further along Route 24 you’ll find Sunrise Highway carving a path through Hampton Bays, Southampton, and the rest. As suited Porsche drivers and bikini-clad, surf-ready regulars crawl (or idle) through the traffic circle and zip right on toward the shores, Riverside remains used but unnoticed, a bypassed pocket of potential at the junction of both forks. For what he nicknames “the gateway to the Hamptons,” Suffolk CountyLegislator Jay Schneiderman envisions a new life—a “Riverside Revival” that will not only beautify the area, but also...| read more ››
