Rep. Bishop Statement on the 79th Anniversary of Social Security

August 14, 2014

Farmingville, N.Y.— Today, Representative Tim Bishop issued the following statement on the 79th anniversary of Social Security:

“79 years ago today, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Social Security into law and made a solemn promise to the American people—that if you work hard, invest in yourself and in your country, you will be rewarded with security, peace of mind and a stable retirement. This bedrock law remains a foundation of our society and has lifted millions of seniors, widows and widowers, and people with disabilities out of poverty, and it is essential for many middle-class families.

The fact that Lee Zeldin wants to privatize Social Security and end guaranteed retirement benefits for our nation’s seniors is deeply disturbing. His Tea Party agenda would undermine seniors’ economic security and throw millions of seniors into poverty.

I will always protect Social Security for our nation’s seniors. That’s my commitment to the people of Long Island.”
