Chains Don't Rattle Themselves - A Concert for Youth Justice

Date:
Sunday, March 12, 2017 - 4:00pm
  • Long Island Action

Did you know that New York is one of only two states that automatically prosecutes all 16- and 17-year-olds as adults? There has been a campaign building in New York State since 2012 to change this so that teenagers are kept out of adult jails and prisons, where they are more likely to face abuse and return to prison later in life. I know there is a lot of work that we need to do to resist Trump at the federal level, but one of the most powerful ways we can do that is by continuing to make New York a more progressive state in the face of our regressive federal government. We have particular power on Long Island because of the Republican State Senators that represent us. Certain Senators (Phillips, Marcellino) have seemed willing to support this issue but have not come out in support publicly, this event will help to put the pressure on them to become strong supporters!

This event is a concert to share stories about this issue and to move people to take action. The concert will feature stories developed by Herstory Writers Workshop, and songs that have been inspired by them performed by the Songwriter's Orchestra. The concert will feature several Broadway performers and a 12 piece orchestra. Title derived from Dathonie Pinto's forthcoming book Chains Don't Rattle Themselves. The event will feature stories developed by Herstory Writers Workshop, read by Pinto, Anjelique Wadlington, and more. Check out our website for more information and to purchase tickets!
