James Dougherty

Shelter Island Town Supervisor

A native of Baldwin, New York, Jim has had a home on Shelter Island since 1976. Completing his third term as Supervisor, Jim was trained as a lawyer and practiced for twenty years before joining Supermarkets General Corporation-Pathmark Supermarkets, becoming President in 1987. His education includes Dartmouth College, Columbia Law School and Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. Jim’s priorities as Supervisor have been preserving Shelter Island’s unique environment and keeping it financially healthy. Jim served two years active duty in Europe as LTJG, US Naval Reserve. His dedication to Shelter Island has been shown in the SI Comprehensive Plan Committee, 1992-94 and Chairman of the Comprehensive Plan’s Zoning and Open Space Subcommittee; Chairman, South Fork-SI Chapter, The Nature Conservancy, 1992-95; a Founder and Chairman of the Board, The Peconic Baykeeper, 1998-2002; and Member of the Board of Directors, NY League of Conservation Voters, 1995-98. On a broader level Jim served as: Volunteer, Project Hope-State Department, in Riga, Latvia, March 1992; Volunteer, International Executive Service Corps. - In Siberia, Russia, October-December 1996 and in Cairo, Egypt, October-December 1998.
