Steve Bellone’s bid for Suffolk County executive got some serious star power behind it Monday night as Gov. Andrew Cuomo joined him at a packed ballroom at theHuntington Hilton in Melville.

The event, which typically serves as the Suffolk County Democratic Committee’s fall dinner, raised $500,000, according to Chairman Rich Schaffer. Not all of that money will go toward Bellone’s campaign, Schaffer explained, but will be used by the Democratic committee in key legislative races this November as well.read more

With seven weeks to go until it’s known who will be the next Suffolk County executive, the two candidates vying for the seat held their first public debate Thursday morning.

The event, hosted jointly by the Long Island Association and the Association for a Better Long Island at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, featured Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, the Republican candidate, discussing plans and trading barbs with Supervisor Steve Bellone, the Democratic hopeful. I was one of a few hundred in attendance at today’s debate between the Steve Bellone and Angie Carpenter, two candidates running for Suffolk County executive, hosted by the Long Island Association and the Association for a Better Long Island. Since our reporter John Callegari was taking copious notes for a story on the debate, I had the luxury of simply listening.

My takeaway: Political debates are sales presentations, and today’s contest offered lessons applicable to executives competing for a piece of business.read more
