Karen Sartain is running to continue her position as
Southampton Town Justice, which she was appointed to in
January 2020. She brings almost 30 years of legal experience
to the bench including as a Staff Attorney for the Legal Aid
Society in Southampton.
The Hon. Karen Sartain, an attorney in Westhampton, is a
licensed member of the state bars of New York and Florida
and of the United States District Court for the Southern and
Eastern Districts of New York and Southern and Middle
Districts of Florida. She graduated from the University of
Pennsylvania in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
Judge Sartain then earned her Juris Doctorate in 1993 from the
University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.
Judge Sartain began her legal career as an Assistant Public
Defender in the Miami Public Defender’s office. During her
time there, she gained experience representing Miami’s
indigent clients from arraignment through sentencing. That
included taking over 40 trials to verdict. In 2016, Judge Sartain
became a Staff Attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk
County. She worked exclusively in the Southampton Town
Justice Court representing clients in our community. In 2018,
Judge Sartain left the Legal Aid Society to start her own
practice, Karen Sartain Law, P.C. She continued defending
clients who did not have the resources when she was appointed
by the Court and as a volunteer attorney for the East End
Regional Intervention Court (Drug Court).
